Rules are always on your side.

Hi.

First off, this article honestly sucks, and I hope you don't take it too seriously!

I found something interesting on twitter.

To sum it up, "The combination of these two cards looks strong! This could be useful for Valakut's trigger!"

Now let's write about this strange combo.

Table of Contents

What kind of card is this?

Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth

Legendary Land

Each land is a Forest in addition to its other land types.

Adapted from GATHERER

In summary, it is a《forest》version of《Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth》.

Mind Bend

(Blue)

Instant

Change the text of target permanent by replacing all instances of one color word with another or one basic land type with another. (For example, you may change "nonblack creature" to "nongreen creature" or "forestwalk" to "islandwalk." This effect lasts indefinitely.)

Adapted from GATHERER

In summary, it is a card that can change the color or basic land type described in the text. There are strong color countermeasure cards, such as《Pyroblast》and《Hydroblast》.This card is used to neutralize these cards. It is now used in EDH's《Momir Vig, Simic Visionary》along with all the color changing cards.

Combo Description

You're starting to see what the combo is all about. The idea is to change the text《Forest》in《Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth》to 《Mountain》.

I was able to create a situation where《Dryad of the Ilysian Grove》was on the battlefield using only lands.

Let's take it one step further

Honestly, there's not much more to say about the combo since it's as mentioned above. So let's go one step further and improve our understanding of the rules.

For example, you control 7 lands and cast 《Scapeshift》.You sacrificed 7 lands.I then searched for 1《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》and 6《Mountains》and put them on the battlefield.Opponent cast《Mind Bend》, stacked with 6 triggers generated from《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》.《Mind Bend》changed《Mountain》to《Island》in your《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》text.

Do you know how many points of damage your opponent will take in this situation?

The answer is 18 damage. I will now explain why 18 damage is necessary, following the flow of the rules.

First, let's go through the triggers of《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》along the flow.

Set《Mountain》with《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》on the battlefield.

Check to see if there are five 《mountain》, excluding the set《mountain》(check trigger event).

《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》trigger will only occur if there are 5 or more《Mountain》.

After triggering, the target is selected and loaded into the stack via State-Based Action.

Active and non-active players pass priority.

《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》trigger is subject to the Intervening "If" Clause Rule. So make sure you have at least 5《Mountain》on the battlefield when the trigger resolves, not including the 《Mountain》that was set again.

If the trigger condition is met, 3 points of damage will be resolved as appropriate.

The above is a simple flow.I could go into more detail, but this article doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

The key to solving this《Mindbend》problem is the Intervening "If" Clause Rule and State-Based Action.

Intervening "If" Clause Rule is a Triggered Ability that has a conditional statement immediately after the trigger event.Generally, it is applied to anything described with the syntax "when ~, if ~, do ~"("when 〜, do 〜 if 〜" is not applicable).

The most famous card that applies the if theory is 《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》in Modern. Other formats include《Field of the Dead》,《Bridge from Below》,and《Pestilence》.

State-Based Action is an item that is automatically checked when a player gets priority. This does not go on the stack and is processed immediately. This is not an effect and is not controlled by any player.Although the term is not written in the text, a variety of events are executed by this process, from the destruction of creatures by damage to the victory or defeat of the game. Then, when it is loaded on the Stack via State-Based Action, it is treated as independent.

With these two explanations, you now understand why the damage is 18.

As soon as《Scapeshift》is cast and the search is completed, it is immediately loaded into the Stack via State-Based Action, so 《Mindbend》 interference is not in time. The reason is that the triggers for《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》on the Stack are independent, so anything on the Stack will refer to the《Mountain》even if the text is changed. The Intervening "If" Clause Rule applies, so it's appropriate because there are 6《Mountain》at resolution, which means 3*6 is 18 damage(《Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle》, rewritten by《Mindbend》, refers to a land type rewritten from the following trigger).

Remembering that there is such a process will help you understand whether it will be advantageous or disadvantageous when you encounter an unknown card.

Learning the rules of the cards you use on a regular basis is directly related to your victory, so it is worth studying the rules.

That's all. To be honest, I don't think this article will help you right away. Why did you publish this article? You would think.

This is to reduce the number of victims like me who were cast Mindbend three years ago and lost due to misjudgment.Let's have fun with titanshift and be strong in the rules!

I know it's a shitty post, but thanks for reading!

Bye.
